PROJECT OVERVIEW

Enhancing the Jewellery Box Experience at Den Gamle By

This project focused on creating a digital experience for Den Gamle By, an open-air museum in Aarhus, Denmark. We chose the Jewellery Box exhibition, home to a world-class collection of Danish jewellery spanning 100 years. Despite its cultural significance, the Jewellery Box lacked interactivity and attracted fewer visitors compared to other exhibits. Our goal was to design an engaging app to make the exhibition more appealing and fun for visitors.

RESEARCH AND CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

To create a digital solution for the Jewellery Box exhibit, we began by analyzing visitor reviews on various platforms. This helped us gather valuable insights into visitors’ frustrations, needs, and expectations for their museum experience. Next, we developed an observation guide and an interview guide to prepare for on-site research and collect qualitative feedback from museum visitors. During our field research, we observed how visitors interacted with the exhibit, focusing on their behavior, engagement levels, and movement through the space. We also mapped the visitors’ journey to uncover their emotions, behaviors, and pain points while exploring the Jewellery Box.

SOLUTION DESIGN

Building on our research, we held brainstorming sessions to define our main concept and the digital solution. Our aim was to create a more engaging, interactive, and educational experience for visitors.

Jewellery Filter: We designed an AR filter using Meta Spark, so that visitors can try on virtual jewellery by scanning a QR code.

Interactive Game: We developed a story-driven game where users can make choices about jewellery pieces, learning about their history and design in a fun and engaging way.

Added interactive elements that provided deeper insights into the stories and cultural significance of the jewellery pieces on display.
